I believe that Global warming is the biggest calamity that humans need to address with urgency and top priority. We need to change our mindset and current ways of living in our world so that our planet and life as we know it, is sustainable. Global warming is gonna be a big problem in our world in the next 10 to 20 years. With humans constantly burning fuel, trees and fossil fuel, it's rapidly increasing the amount of Co2 (or carbon dioxide) and not leaving enough oxygen for humans to breathe. With Co2, CH4 (Methane) and N2o Nitrous oxide from factories are forming a barrier around earth, This means a lot of the heat that the sun is producing for earth is being trapped in our atmosphere and not bouncing back into space causing the earth to warm, this is called the greenhouse effect.
The temperature is getting hotter and hotter; it is estimated that in 20 years 40 percent of the planet will be uninhabitable. The heat is not only responsible for mass wildfires destroying forests, homes, wild animals and people. It is also causing the polar caps to melt, glaziers to shrink and is resulting in sea level rises. And our generation is going to be the most impacted, it stands to reason that we need to change the way we conduct our lives, and we need to educate our parents and grandparents to do the same thing as well.
For humans to continue a sustainable life on earth, we need to make massive sacrifices. This means changing the way we live right now. We need to stop using cars as much and try to use electric cars, try public transportation, try biking, walking, running and other ways of transportation that doesn't include burning fossil fuels. We need to stop buying and consuming goods that come at a high cost of the health of our environment. This means stop buying so many disposable goods and invest in better products with much longer lifespans. As much as i don't want to say this but it is very true, we need to stop eating lots of meat. Cow effluent (poo) being poorly placed and poorly dealt with, pollutes the soil, aquifers and waterways. Also the manufacturing of the milk we drink uses a lot of inconvenient resources that damages our earth
Hopefully this speech wasn't too confusing and I really hope that you got something out of this. I hope you learned the consequences and fate of our future and future children will have to face. I really hope this taught you something. I really encourage you to tell your whanau and friends. I don't expect you to make all these changes straight away but i hope you are prepared. Thank you for listening.
